Phang Nga
Thailand’s untouched, escapist Adaman paradise
Phang Nga
Phang Nga has grown in notoriety for those looking to get away from the bustle of Phuket (or wind down after a week in Patong!), as it is just over a bridge off the island into mainland Thailand and an hour North of Phuket International Airport.
It is best known for its stunning coastline on both the Andaman Sea and the magical Phang Nga Bay in the Gulf of Thailand, as well as its storied islands and archipelago – particularly those often spotted in pages of glossy magazines, such as Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai – all of which are fab places to play Robinson Crusoe with just your backpack; or live it up in a high-end resort.
There are plenty of uninhabited islands to explore too … day trips to snorkel, or cruise these islands (James Bond fans will love Koh Tapu) are also available; as are sea kayak, yacht or motorboat charters – make sure to drop by the floating village community of Koh Panyee while on your ocean adventure.
Phang Nga province is enormous and characterised by unspoilt natural beauty, rugged but breathtaking karst limestone landscapes (a photographer’s dream – and while we’re talking happy-snapping, make sure to visit Samet Nangshe Viewpoint), spectacular fiery sunsets and turquoise blue sea.
And all along its coasts and in its lesser-ventured, forested interiors, travelers of all kinds will find fabulous, escapist hotspots and places to stay which make for great basecamps to explore more. And Phang Nga’s friendly residents will be there to ensure a safe and amazing stay.
Most escapees will however stop over in Khao Lak that offers a resort-based retreat experience that feels a world away from Phuket, with beach bars and adventures on offer, as well as a local drag bar and LGBT+ community to boot. It’s also the launching pad for the spellbinding Similan Islands and an LGBT+ run and trans*-positive tour company there does weekly trips to the fabled nine islands.
