A honeymoon in Thailand – what to see and do in the Land of Smiles
Growing up in America during the 90s, I always felt like I existed on the fringes—different, yet unsure of how to express it. Times have slowly changed. However, those formative years shaped how I moved through the world, especially when traveling. I often held back, cautious and guarded, wondering if others would judge me simply for loving differently.
When it came time to celebrate my honeymoon, I wanted more than romance and adventure. I wanted a place where I could fully embrace who I am without fear or hesitation—a place that celebrates diversity and welcomes LGBTQ+ travelers with open arms. Thailand, with its vibrant culture, world-class hospitality, and deep acceptance, was the obvious choice. Not to mention, it was the perfect excuse to dive into the incredible food I grew up eating.
I know that the country has always been more than a travel destination for me; it’s a part of who I am. Thai culture’s openness to individuality and its celebration of love in all its forms have always resonated deeply. Being there as an interracial newlywed with my husband was like coming full circle—a chance to show him Thailand’s diversity while feeling seen and embraced by the locals.
Keep reading as I share some of our favorite experiences as newlyweds in Thailand, consisting of my go-to spots and new adventures we discovered together.
Bangkok: A Warm Welcome in the City of Life

Bangkok was the perfect start to our honeymoon in Thailand. We felt we belonged from the moment we arrived, free to be ourselves. The city’s vibrant LGBTQ+ scene, from its nightlife to popular tourist attractions, didn’t just offer safety. The city celebrated us, making every moment extraordinary.
We started our day with a visit to the iconic Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew). These landmarks are a must-see for their dazzling architecture and rich history, embodying the heart of Thai cultural heritage. After exploring the Grand Palace, we ventured on a boat trip along Bangkok’s canals, often referred to as the “Venice of the East.” These waterways offer a glimpse into the city’s contrasting views—peaceful floating communities against Bangkok’s fast-paced urban backdrop.

If you decide to explore Bangkok on the canals, dock at Poomjai Garden, a charming riverside eatery known for its lush greenery and authentic Thai dishes. Savor the delicate balance of flavors in local favorites like tom kha gai (coconut chicken soup) or pad see ew (stir-fried noodles) as you enjoy the serene surroundings.

We woke early and decided to visit the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market on our second day. Arriving by 7 a.m. ensures you beat the crowds and experience the market at its most vibrant. Long-tail boats piled high with fresh fruits, handmade goods, and steaming noodles filled the air, making us hungry for more. We sampled a little of everything, which would be an understatement, given we wanted to eat everything we smelled.
Later that evening, we visited the House of Heals, the brainchild of Drag Race Thailand host Pangina Heals. Drag queens performed with the energy of a world-class concert; it wasn’t just entertainment but an affirmation of what Bangkok means to several people: belonging.
Exploring Chiang Mai: A Blend of Tradition, Warmth, and Soul

Chiang Mai was our next destination. Located in Northern Thailand, this city is like a love song you have on repeat. Here, life slows down, inviting you to savor every moment, from the rustle of leaves in the mountains to the soulful gaze of elephants you meet up close.
The city’s gentle rhythm allows you to breathe deeper, see clearer, and feel more connected to the land, its people, and yourself. After the electric hum of Bangkok, Chiang Mai was the perfect retreat, a place where time felt infinite, and every experience lingered like a cherished memory.

Our stay at Raya Heritage felt like visiting old friends who welcomed us with open arms and genuine warmth. Located by the river, this boutique hotel is more than a place to rest as it celebrates Northern Thailand’s diversity and beauty. Every corner of the property tells a story, from handwoven textiles to ceramics crafted by local artisans. Browsing the gift shop, we felt a sense of pride knowing our purchases directly support the community.
But it was the hospitality that made us feel truly special. When we arrived, the staff treated us not as guests but as friends. They remembered our names, listened to our stories, and shared in our joy. When they discovered we were on our honeymoon, they cheered us on as we posed for an impromptu photoshoot. Every gesture and smile made us feel like we were the only ones there, and every moment spent at Raya Heritage became a memory of connection and kindness.

One of the most transformative experiences of our trip was our visit to Patara Elephant Conservation on our second day. Known for its commitment to ethical practices, the sanctuary prioritizes the health and happiness of its elephants. Unlike typical tourist attractions, Patara emphasizes education and interaction, meaningfully connecting visitors with the elephants.
Under the guidance of knowledgeable staff, we learned about the elephants’ care, their dietary habits, and their personalities. Walking beside them, feeding them, and witnessing their playful nature was a humbling experience that gave us a deeper appreciation for these majestic animals and the people who protect them.
Chiang Mai’s slower pace of life made room for these intimate moments, and its welcoming LGBTQ+ scene added another layer of comfort and belonging to our time here.
Phuket: Celebration and Connection in Paradise

Phuket was the perfect finale to our honeymoon in Thailand, where the island’s beauty and vibrant energy mirrored our joy. Known as the “Pearl of the Andaman,” it offered luxury and adventure and a welcoming spirit that made it easy to feel at home. From the moment we arrived, the island’s laid-back charm encouraged us to slow down, savor every moment, and connect with those around us.
What made Phuket truly special was the sense of community we found. The LGBTQ+ district, just a short walk from our hotel, felt alive with celebration and inclusivity. Streets pulsed with energy, where drag queens performed with show-stopping charisma, captivating crowds and commanding the night like stars in the sky. It wasn’t just entertainment but a reminder of pride, joy, and freedom.

The highlight of our Phuket adventure was a full-day boat party departing from Chalong Pier. We set sail with fellow travelers from around the world, each bringing their own stories and energy to the experience.
The yacht’s staff were more than just crew—they were the heart of the party. They cheered us on, danced with us, and made sure everyone felt included. Their joy was infectious, setting the tone for a day filled with laughter and adventure. We snorkeled in turquoise waters, lounged on pristine beaches, and soaked in the beauty of the Andaman Sea.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the magic of the day shifted into an intimate celebration. Music filled the air, cocktails flowed freely, and strangers quickly became friends. This trip epitomized the spirit of Phuket—vibrant, inclusive, and alive with connection.
Thailand: A Place for All Loves
Thailand more than lived up to its reputation as a dream LGBTQ+ destination. Known as the “Land of Smiles,” the country greeted us with warmth, acceptance, and celebration at every turn. As an interracial gay couple, we felt not just safe but genuinely embraced. From the vibrant LGBTQ+ nightlife of Bangkok to the heartfelt hospitality in Chiang Mai and the lively community spirit in Phuket, Thailand welcomed us with open arms and made our honeymoon unforgettable.
We encountered countless gay travelers, bonded with fellow couples from around the world, and were met with kindness from locals who celebrated our love without hesitation. For LGBTQ+ travelers, Thailand is more than a destination; it’s a place where diversity thrives. We will be back!
